In what year did Persia’s name changed to Iran?
I’m trying to date an old globe. Iran is called Persia, Indonesia is called Borneo and Thailand is called Siam.
Any gorograpy or history majors out there who can help me figure out how old my globe may be?
well…Iran is an older name than Persia really. Sometimes it was known as persia (mainly in the west, due to the ancient greeks), sometimes as iran. Official change? 1935.
As far as i know, borneo is the largest island of indonesia (allthough it’s partly malaysian, and brunei is also on it. In 1935, it was still part of the Dutch West Indies. Those seized to exist in 1942, after the Japanese conquored them.
Siam was renamed Thailand in 1939.
Conclusion: it’s should be from before 1935. That’s all i can tell you based on this information

The Red Square at Moscow is greatly dwarfed by this structure.
O Bridges and parks: The bridges over the Zyandah Rud are great pieces of architecture. The oldest ones among them are the Pol-e-Shahrestan and Pol-e-Khaju. Another bridge called Pol-e-Jubi was built to provide water to the gardens in the royal palace. The longest bridge covering 295m in length is the Si-o-Seh Pol, which has arches numbering up to 33.
O Artisans and craftsmen: Because of the presence of a number of mosques and other prominent public buildings, the need for artists and craftsmen came up. This led to a number of artists flooding the city of Isfahan. Beautiful works of art were created and left for the generations to come. On your trip to Iran, you will be treated to a great exhibit of these paintings in the museums.
O Persian gardens: When you visit Isfahan, you will notice that the entire city has been built based on the Persian garden plans. The visual effects play with the beauty of sunlight. The structure of the buildings was designed to capture sunlight as much as possible. At the same time, shade is provided from the harsh rays of the Sun by big trees and trellises. Qanats or underground tunnels are used to irrigate the gardens. Your trip to Iran is incomplete without a look at these places.
O Armenian quarter: Don’t forget to travel to the Armenian quarter when you visit Isfahan. It is one of the classic examples of universal brotherhood. It has the Armenians staying here in great compatibility with the Iranians. The area is called New Jolfa as a namesake for the original place in Armenia.

Was Iran’s old name, Persia, a name created by western people?
Did people in Iran always refer to it as Iran and never Persia? If so, why do some people from Iran say they are Persian?
The original name was Paras, the western people has chnaged to Persia (like Mongolia, India, Indonesia, Maleshia and so on) The Zorostraian acknowledge themselves proudly as from Paras and known as Parsi. But followers of Islam changed the name to Iran and do not choose to use the word Paras
